In The Beginning
In 2006 or 07 a post on the Gateway Z Club website asked if another brand of car could join the club because their brand club was lacking. That post got my mind going and I approached them with the idea of starting a branch off club that was run the same but was for all sports cars instead of just the Nissan Z car, it was met with deaf ears, but that was ok. I had tried to start a 240sx based car club many times and Justin Smith was involved in almost every attempt, they all had failed for one reason or another. None of this had left my mind in August of 2007 when I was sitting with Tony Elkin at Sonic and he came to me with the idea of starting a 240sx car club (we both had one.) I said, been there done that, but I do have this idea I think can work really well. Both Justin and Tony were in, we then got started.
The Start Of A Club
September 2007, Gateway Sports Cars is born. I wanted to emulate the Gateway Z Club in as many ways as possible, I set it up with a board and had high hopes of us doing racing events and it running without me there all of the time, pretty quickly. I was also SURE it would be the next best thing to sliced bread and I was going to have a ton of fun, admittedly, it was none of that but I digress. Andrew Joseph was our very first paid membership and Saul Davidson with A&G Mobile Detailing was our first sponsor (along with being a great friend for many years, but hey.) We were on the way to becoming exactly what I thought we could be.
The Great Fun
In 2008 we grew faster than I expected, went on many drives, looked into autocross events and what it would take to get those started. With wineries and restaurants as destinations our sports cars got used as they were intended, driving them, and quickly (albeit safely.) There are many pictures of these events on the Events Gallery page, feel free to look through them please. We ended 2008 with a car show, something I was dead set against and hated, but in retrospect, was a good time and we got to meet a lot of new people, so it was a win in my book.
Why Did This Not Keep Going
The Club is a 40 hour a week job, that I pay to do. It was costing myself at least $150.00 a month to be able to do the events we were able to achieve, and the stuff we really wanted to do was still out of reach. The reality is that I simply ran out of money, then on top of that, my "fun" car died as well. So without money or a sports car, the club fell into disarray, totally my fault, I take all the blame.
The Rebirth Of A Great Club
While I made many great decisions, I made several missteps and with hindsight on my side I feel it's time to get Gateway Sports Cars restarted. I hope with this new lease on life for the club, you will have as much fun as I hope to since I have a new outlook on everything. I'm changing things up, slightly, but in a manner that will benefit everyone involved. Please check it out and join if you feel like it is something that you too will have fun with.
